The Stolen Earth
by Phil LongI’ve just watched penultimate episode of the current series of Doctor Who - titled ‘The Stolen Earth’ in which the Earth (and 26 other planets) have been re-located as part of some yet-to-be-revealed diabolical Dalek plan hatched by none-other than Davros himself.
As is Russell T.Davies way, the episode had something of the ‘epic’ about it; it was an adrenalin-fueled roller-coaster which stretches beyond where Doctor Who might normally go - giving the impression that “nothing will ever be the same”. It was fun, but as we know Doctor Who works on the basis that it’s grounded in a recognisable ‘Earth’ so there’s no option but to push the reset button so any lasting changes don’t make the Doctor Who universe too different to the real world - as far as modern day Earth is concerned. In the last series we had a fantastic build up with the Master’s return in ‘Utopia’ and ‘The Sound of Drums’ - but ultimately the ending was somewhat disappointing in ‘The Last of the Time Lords‘. I expect something similar may happen with this one.
Fantastic seeing Davros and I think they’ve done an excellent job of bringing him back - as they have with all of the big bad villains revived in the new series.
One really nice touch, and I guess not everybody will pick up on it, was in the scene with ‘The Shadow Proclamation’. They were first mentioned in the very first episode when Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor confronted the Autons - and have effectively replaced the Time Lords as the Police force of the Universe. This is where the little flashback to previous Doctor’s encounters with his own people came in - as The Shadow Proclamation demand he lead them in battle the Doctor dodges the responsibility handed to him just as he dodged the Presidency of the Time Lords on several occasions.
Now, how is Davies going to come back from the Doctor having begun to regenerate; given we already know Tennant has filmed the Christmas special…

Of course Time Lords can regenerate into an identical physical form…
