Boxee update for AppleTV

by Phil Long

Boxee has been updated – and a very nice update it is too. The primary improvements, from a UK users point of view, is the inclusion of BBC’s iPlayer in the ‘Internet Videos’ and Joost. For American users MTV has also been added; unfortunately that won’t stream to the UK.

I updated my AppleTV last night with the latest version and watched the first two episodes of Oz and James Drink to Britain. This evening I’ve been having a gander at ‘Joost’. As I write I’ve just watched a few Deftones video and am listening/watching the video for Alice in Chains’ “Heaven Beside You”.

I’m well impressed with iPlayer on it – it’s a much easier to use interface than the plugin I installed for XBMC on the AppleTV. Also helpful that I didn’t have to SSH in to the AppleTV to put the plugin on there either. The only danger of course is to bandwidth usage; as it really is easy to just start watching things. Similar situation with Joost too – generally a good interface (but a bit of a pause after watching a video, and I’m getting sick of the trailer for Valkyrie!) plus it has full episodes of some stuff I like (albeit older things). Flight of the Conchords and Smallville for example.
