Sticky tape and glass…

by Phil Long

It’s been a while…

I figured I’d update this with a few things which have happened lately. As is common for my most recent postings (so, last couple of posts or last couple of years - pretty much the same thing) there is a distinct car motif to this one.

About a month ago my Tomcat got broken in to in Rochdale on a Saturday afternoon while I was getting my hair cut and doing a bit of shopping at M&S. It seems some fu…opportunist… decided it was worth smashing my drivers-side window to see whether I might have happened to leave valuables in the glove box… which I hadn’t. It wouldn’t have been a huge deal if I had, I discovered, when I started ringing round for quotes to replace the glass.

The quotes I got to replace the window ranged from £167 through to £180, including fitting and VAT. So, I decided to see whether I could find one through scrap dealers and save myself some money. I did fill in some parts finder forms online, and called a couple of places in Rochdale and then kind of forgot - and left my car in the car park at work (where it was secure). Yesterday I finally decided I need my car back and rang around for quotes again. This time they had gone up to between £190 and £220. Wrong direction, obviously, so I took a quick look on e-Bay for parts. Thankfully there were a couple of Rover 220 Coupés breaking. I now have a window making it’s way to me - for £30 including delivery and VAT. Which is nice.

I will of course have to fit it myself, and some time this weekend I intend to take my door trim off so I can take a look at the task ahead of me. I’ve replaced glass in a car door before when “Custard” was broken in to - so I’m reasonably confident I’ll be able to avoid making a mess of it.

This evening I’ve driven around in the car a bit to charge the battery, washed the car and also spent a couple of hours getting tape off my car door which had decided to remain stuck to it. The tape was holding a blue bag thing on to ensure the interior was not exposed to the harsh Rochdale elements. All in all it was a good excuse to be out of the house given the current nice weather. It was also nice to experience the acceleration of my car again.

In other news, we’ve had a few barbeques now to start the summer season (although the first took place in the rain). The last two have been after work in the sun, however, so far more sane.

The FA Cup is on Saturday and I’m planning to see how the telly looks facing out in to the garden if it’s sunny - so we can sit outside looking in. Unfortunately SkyHD has yet to be installed, so no HD-wonderment for this particular game. However, I have an install date of Tuesday, May 23, so I’m looking forward to a HD World Cup (well, as far as the BBC coverage goes).

Finally, I’m off to France on the boat at the end of May with my dad. It’ll have been around six months since I last had anything amounting to time off work - so I’m well overdue a break. Maybe I’ll post something on here about that… or maybe I’ll forget and not update this until September or something.
